Choosing the Right Flooring

If you are a pet owner, choosing flooring in your home can be difficult, whether you are buying a new home or remodeling your existing home. We know that your pets are an important part of the family. So it’s a good idea to consider a flooring option that is practical for both you, and your pets.  As you probably know already, pets can be very hard on flooring surfaces. It’s important to know which flooring options will work best.

Now, carpeted flooring is certainly a more affordable option, but carpet can wear quickly and it tends to absorb stains and odors very easily.  Likewise, hardwood flooring can scratch, stain, and absorb moisture, making it an impractical choice as well.  For this reason, many homeowners choose a stone or tile flooring option.

Stone Flooring

Stone flooring is an excellent choice for pet owners for a number of reasons.  For starters, stone flooring is very scratch resistant and even when scratches do occur, they are very difficult to notice. Stone also does not absorb moisture like carpets do. This makes it especially easy to clean if your pets have an accident. Similarly, it will not absorb odors, so you can keep your house smelling fresh and clean. There are a few options for stone but generally speaking granite is the best choice for a durable floor because it is the hardest of the natural stones.  Other, softer stones such as marble, travertine, and slate are still good options, but they may need a bit more maintenance.

Tile Flooring

Similar to stone flooring, tile flooring offers many of the same benefits including scratch resistance, durability, and odor and moisture control.  The main downside to stone and tile flooring is the fact that they are hard and cold, making for an uncomfortable place for pets to lie down.  Invest in rugs and pet beds to solve this problem.

When choosing a flooring surface for your pets, you can’t go wrong with either stone or tile.  Both types of flooring offer great benefits for pets and are very durable surfaces.  It’s up to you to choose which you prefer based on your budget and personal taste.  Remember, regardless of which flooring you choose, it is recommended that stone and tile flooring be professionally cleaned every 12-18 months to ensure they look their best and are clean and sanitized. Acme Chem-Dry will take good care of your tile, stone, and even carpet cleanings.
