Unless you hire your own personal housemaid, keeping the place clean and organized can sometimes be tricky, especially if you have children, pets, or a significant other. There is a lot to get done: bed to be made, floors to be mopped, dishes to be cleaned, and more! The fact is a healthier home is a happier home. If you have additional sets of hands that live under your roof, you shouldn’t be doing all those jobs by yourself! It’s nearly impossible to find a kid that enjoys cleaning, but here’s how you can change that in a few simple steps:

Involve the Toddlers (It’s Never Too Early!)

Having toddlers can be the best of times, and the worst of times. It’s a fun age, but toddlers are experts at making the home look like a disaster. Use all of that energy they have to your advantage. Teach them to be responsible for something small like putting away their toys or making their bed in the morning. Kids do well when they feel that you as a parent trust them with a responsibility. Even though it may be small, you will be amazed at how much more time you seem to have to work in other areas of the home.

The Art of Bribery: Implement a Reward System

Whether you are 5 years old, or 55, everybody is motivated by some sort of reward. This is essential to getting your kids on board. Go to the craft store and get a large sheet of cardboard (a whiteboard works too). With markers and stickers, make a chart that shows each family member’s name, with a list of chores that need to be done to the side. Keep each chore appropriate for the age of each child. The goal is to make your children feel good about themselves, not to discourage them with too many difficult chores.

Together as a family, determine a reward for each week’s successful completion of chores. That could be anything from a trip to a favorite restaurant, a round of mini golf, or maybe a toy the kids have been talking about. You decide how big or small the rewards will be, but choose something that will motivate the kids to do an excellent job. Like they say, a family that cleans together, sticks together (and makes great memories together)!
